URI Valet - Help Files

What is the URI Valet?

Its a culmination of tools that we use on a regular basis when performing technical audits, site reviews, quality control, and a host of other important information about documents in general.

The URI Valet will perform the following functions...

  1. Check server headers and show recursive results. For example, if a URI is redirecting, we show you all the server headers and the final destination URI.
  2. Select from a list of popular User-Agents (UAs) to see what is happening if a browser UA makes the request or a bot UA.
  3. <head></head> summary which includes a basic breakdown of <title> and metadata elements being used.
  4. Unique objects are categorized, counted and presented in summary form along with interactive Flash charts. Click and right click on the charts to activate.
  5. Time to download is presented based on six (06) different speeds. This data is being calculated based on Martindale's File Download Time Calculator.
  6. Object details are reported including HTTP Status, URI, Count, Size, Type, Tag, CSS and Background (BG). We do show recursive HTTP status codes.
  7. Internal link verification can be invoked by the user and we report all recursive HTTP status codes. We show you how many times that link appears along with the time it took to retrieve it from the server.
  8. External link verification can be invoked by the user and we report all recursive HTTP status codes. We show you how many times that link appears along with the time it took to retrieve it from the server.

Admin Note: If you are wondering why the numbering of Internal and External Links is out of sync, that is because we record them as they are found. This is the same sequence a spider would see those URI references.

For example, you may have 45, 46 and 49 listed for Internal Links and then 47 and 48 listed in the External Links. It is all relative to how they are ordered in the source code. We're going to read your page like a spider, starting from the top, from left to right, to the end while stripping away markup.

  9. You can view the URI content in HTML, Text and Preview modes. Text mode is what the bot would get after stripping markup.
  10. You can validate HTML/XHTML/CSS/P3P all from one interface. Quickly perform quality checks on URIs. You'd be surprised at the number of errors and the types of errors we see being reported. Some are rather fatal.

We hope you'll take a bit of time out of your busy schedules to provide us with any additional feedback, requests, questions, etc. about the URI Valet. We are open to any and all suggestions for improvement.

For those of you who have read this far, if you have a testimonial to share with us about the URI Valet, please do submit it via the Report a Bug/Request Features link. We'll be posting those comments for public review along with a link to your profile URI and your home page URI.

An example of a testimonial would be that you found a redirect that you didn't know existed and it has possibly been the cause of other issues. We feel the URI Valet is an invaluable tool for all Internet marketers. We designed it so it was easy to understand and allows you to quickly determine if certain potential technical issues exist that could, or are, causing problems with a URI.

Previous Announcements about the URI Valet

2007-01-24 - Just a quick update to alert you to three major additions to the URI Valet.

  1. You can now verify the status of your internal links.
  2. You can now verify the status of your external links.
  3. Real time http status for objects. We show you all server responses.

In addition to the above, we've improved the speed 5x since first launching the Beta. Other bugs have been fixed and continue to be fixed as they are reported. I think we've got the majority of them taken care of. There will always be at least one site that we cannot report on due to a number of reasons. Please do keep in mind that we are still in Beta and that we welcome your feedback and/or feature requests. Hurry, get those requests in now before we make our big announcement.

New address for the URI Valet...

We will be moving the URI Valet and our Check Server Headers tools to their own server within the next 30 days.

2007-01-20 - We've been working diligently in honoring an incoming volley of wish lists from directory members and others who are assisting us with the development of the URI Valet. Please remember that we are still in Beta. This has been an excellent learning experience for us as we are entrenched in the ways of the bot. We've uncovered problems with URIs that site owners did not know they had. This is our goal, to provide a web based tool that will allow you to check the "quality" of a page based on a number of technical factors.

Since our announcement on 2007 January 16, Tuesday, we've addressed over 100 different items for the URI Valet. Many of the bugs you reported have now been addressed. We've added quite a bit of information to what you previously reviewed. We think you'll be pleased with our progress...

As always, your continued feedback and wish lists are appreciated. Use the Report a Bug/Request a Feature link available at the top of the page.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

P.S. In upcoming weeks, look for the new Check Server Headers tool to be merged in with the URI Valet for a comprehensive analysis of individual URIs.

2007-01-16 - We'd like to offer you a "Sneak Preview" of our new URI Valet service which is currently in development. We'd like to get your feedback, wants, needs, etc. addressed before we release Phase I of the URI Valet service.

What do you think?

What does it need? Is there something not being reported correctly now? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

P.S. We'll be adding a User-Agent dropdown in the next 24-48 hours. We'll also be adding a window which will show you what a spider sees. What else would you like to see shown?
